THE CRACKED POT
A water bearer had two large pots, hung on each ends of a
pole which rested across the back of her neck. One pot had a crack, while the
other pot was perfect. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the
house, the cracked pot arrived only half full, while the perfect pot was full. Of
course, the perfect pot was proud it could carry a full pot of water as it was
made to do. The cracked pot was ashamed and miserable it could only accomplish
half of what it was made for.
After 2 years of what it thought was failure to fulfill his purpose,
it apologized to the water bearer. “I am ashamed of myself, because the crack
in my side leaks the water on the way home. “ The water bearer said to the cracked
pot, “did you notice that there were flowers on your side of the path, but not
on the other pot’s side? I’ve always
known about your crack, and I planted seeds of your side of the path. Every
day as we walked back, you’ve watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these
beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you
are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.”
We all
have something imperfect about ourselves, is your imperfection creating beauty
or gracing someone else’s life?
